The importance of doing small things

From the carton, we can clearly see that the boy is worried about disposing of nuclear waste, while his father tells him to empty the dustbin first. This carton reminds me of a Chinese saying: If you don"t clean the room(solve your problems), then how can you control the world. However, most people always attach great importance to something big, but neglect small things. In my opinion, it is necessary and important to do small things. On the one hand, doing small things well helps us to develop good habits, which set a good foundation for our future development. There is no doubt that one of the greatest differences between succesand failure is the importance placed on little things. On the other hand, the big is the little. If something needs to be done, it is big. No matter what kinds of task, if it is worth doing, it can be big. Taking all these into account, we can easily notice that it is reasonable to do small things before big ones. So before doing important things, let’s empty our dustbin first!

     The Prevalence of Western Holidays

Many young people in China today prefer Western holidays to traditional ese festivals. Christmas is now celebrated by the younger generation all over China, and it has become especially popular as a romantic holiday for boyfriends and girlfriends or young married couples. Valentine"s Day is also extremely popular, and even Halloween is being celebrated now.

This phenomenon has actually developed quite naturally in recent decades due to our educational system"s focus on English study and therefore on English-speaking cultures. To many students, Western culture has become a symbol of self-expression and freedom from restraint. Celebrating Western holidays has become a way for students to express their love of something different from traditional Chinese culture, and to have fun together with their own generation.

In my opinion, it"s fine for students learning English and studying English-speaking cultures to celebrate Western holidays with their teachers and classmates. However, the way I see it, unless the young people later go abroad to live in those cultures, there is no reason for them to continue to celebrate them. We Chinese should hold on to our traditional festivals, the festivals which we have celebrated for centuries.

Living alone or Living with Roommates

Nowadays, there has appeared a heated discussion among the college students as to whether they should live alone outside the campus or live together with other roommates in the students’ dormitory. Opinions are divided over the matter。(提出观点段)

Those who are in favor of living alone maintain that it is very convenient to live by themselves. They can enjoy absolute freedom in a room of their own. They can have their own timetable without disturbing others. They are also free to equip the room with a personal computer so that they can have easy access to the Internet. (反面论述段)

But others argue that living with rmates has attractions of its own. With several students sharing the same room, each person’s experiences can be greatly enriched. They can leara lot from talking to one another. By learning to tolerate the differences between individuals, they can become more mature。(正面论述段)

As far as I’m concernedI prefer to live with roommates because I love the feeling of belonging. Besides, it is a lot cheaper to live in a dorm than to rent an apartment outside the campus. (总结观点段)

     Dear Mark,

You will never guess what I am going to tell you in this letter. I have received the letter of admission from Harvard University. This means I am going to do my doctor degree program this fall in America. After year of hard work, I now have finally realized my dream of being able to work in the most advanced laboratory the world with the most outstanding top scientists in the field of genetic engineering.

I am now very busy preparing for this trip of utmost importance in my life. I spend most of my time improving my oral and aural English. You know I have a good command of written English. In fact, I have written my papers in English, some of which have been published abroad already. But my listening and speaking ability of English is far behind. I am afraid that this poor command of listening and speaking will hinder the effective communication once I am abroad. Can you just suggest any good way of improving my oral English skills quickly? I am a bit anxious recently.

Anyway, I will try my best.

Hope to hear from you soon!

     College Students’ Job Hunting

In recent years, college students find it increasingly difficult to get a job. It sounds strange since young college students are usually intelligent, well-educated phenomenon, aspirant and eager to bring their talent into full play. Then what underlies the strange phenomenon? (提出问题段)

There are several reasons for this. To begin with, nowadays college students aim too high. All they want are “good” jobs which could offer good salar comfortable working conditions, high social status among others. Consequently, most college students are unwilling to accept vacant jobs they consider not “good” enough. Another reason is that there is a big gap between the majors some students study in school and the demands of vacant jobs. So companies think some students are not fit for the jobs。(说明原因段)

Solution to the problem requires efforts on both the society and the students. The companies should value the students, talent and knowledge while the latter should not merely aim at material gains. They should be down-to–earth in building up their career. Furthermore, they should face their weak points so as to improve themselves and be more competent. (解决问题段)

     Yours,

      Li Ming.

     Wealth and Happiness

Everybody wants to get wealth. In today’s material world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person’s success and capability. Many people just make every effort, pay any price to attain greater wealth. With money, they can but nice, large apartments in nice neighborhood; with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems to bring all happiness in life.

In my opinion, people cannot do anything without money, but money is not everything. What money will bring you depends on your personal belief and goal in life. If are kind enough to help others, especially the poor, money is a good thing to you. With it, you can do much more for the benefit of people and country, and it will and to your own happiness. If you want money just for your own needs, you’ll never be satisfied or happy. In a word, you should have money spent for more people, only then can money be the source of your happiness.
